Field: Plant Identification and Ecology
Responsibilities: Mt. Cuba Center, a botanical garden with a focus on native plants and ecosystems, seeks a candidate to study native terrestrial orchids in the state of Delaware on a 2:year fellowship.The Ecological Research Fellow will lead the Native Orchids of Delaware project, a two year study, funded by Mt. Cuba Center. The fellow will conduct fieldwork on 23 native terrestrial orchid populations found in the state of Delaware. This position will collect orchid seed and root tissue and develop and maintain the database. The research fellow will create and manage an orchid conservation group to monitor the orchids in the study as well as coordinate with state botanists, orchid collaborators,. The final deliverable will be a written research publication describing the state of Orchids in Delaware and future recommendations.
Purpose The purpose of this project is to discover The state of native orchids in Delaware, and from this data craft an integrated conservation plan for the orchids of Delaware with our collaborators. To this purpose, Mt. Cuba Center will assess orchid site conditions and collect orchid seeds and root fungi of 23 species, across two years. Our staff will work collaboratively with our state botanist, and other orchid conservation entities. We intend to hire a research fellow post:doctoral candidate for two years to coordinate this process. The seeds will be seed banked and used for in:vitro seed germination studies. The root tissue studied for fungal isolation and identification. The fungus preserved and used for future symbiotic germination studies.
Qualifications/Requirements: The successful candidate will have experience in plant identification, natural community surveys, plant ecology, and be able to communicate well (verbally and in print) with the public and our conservation collaborators. Familiarity with taxonomic keys and guidebooks for plant identification is necessary. Must have proficiency in ArcGIS, Microsoft (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and other common applications. Ph.D. in plant science or ecology based discipline is preferred. Valid drivers license and ability to conduct field work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions is required.
Compensation: 40 hours/week, 18.50/hour plus healthcare, 401(k) benefits, and PTO
